I have known a few married couples who have maintained separate $. In all cases, both spouses worked earning their own incomes. They handle household expenses from $ contributed to by both.
I have known a few married couples who have failed at keeping $ separately. In those cases, the control of their own $ was more important than meeting mutual goals. Separate goals had precedence.
Bob and I have been married 35 years. In the beginning, he maintained a small checking account to control the flow of his travel expenses and reimbursements. I admit the fact that he did not reconcile this account bothered me. In the end, it became apparent we could handle the in and out flows of business reimbursements without going into debt.
As you can imagine, I maintain the bank accounts and reconcile each monthly. Beyond that, Bob and I have set financial goals together and worked together toward them.
I have not worked full time since 1978. My small W2s help with cash flow but do not contribute in a big way. I am not the quarterback but I am a fullback. We are a team.
'til later
